Preparing to Leave Your Rental: Moving-Out Guide for Tenants

Avoid a frantic panic on moving-out day by following this end-of-tenancy guide.

  • Re-read your lease so you’re clear about what’s expected of you at the end of the contract.

  • Notify your friends, family, bank, service providers, local authority and utilities of your upcoming change of address.

  • If the property has a garden, complete all necessary maintenance, such as weeding, mowing or raking up leaves.

  • Deep clean the property, taking care not to overlook windows, shower screens and the inside of the fridge.

  • Take all your furniture and belongings to your new home.

  • Return the furniture that was in the property when you moved in to its original position and replace missing/faulty lightbulbs.

  • Have all sets of keys on hand to return to the letting agent or landlord.

  • Take final gas, water and electricity readings and forward them to the relevant utility provider.
